Keyword Basics Part 1: How Search Engines Work

How Search Engines Work

One of the most frequently asked questions from website owners is, “Why can’t my site be found on Google?” They know it’s important to appear in search engine results but they just don’t know why it doesn’t happen to them.

Key points

  • The Spider software crawls the web looking for new pages to collect and add to the search engine indices.
  • The Index software catches everything the Spider can throw at it

They may well be in awe of the ‘black arts’ of search engine optimization or puzzled by the complexity of it all. If they’re unlucky they will have paid out money to some snake oil salesman guaranteeing to get them to the top in 48 hours – and been sorely disappointed with the lack of traffic that results.

Most search engine optimizers are highly ethical, professional people but they do tend to keep their cards close to their chest.

The Big Secret is There is No Big Secret

It’s true: the ‘big secret’ of search engine optimization is that there is no big secret.

It is all about understanding what is going on, followed by the hard work and attention to detail that are common to many business activities.

This article is about understanding what is going on inside a search engine. It is just under 800 words in length but that is more than enough to give you what you need to know, albeit in simple terms.

Inside the Guts of a Search Engine

For simplicity’s sake, let’s say there are three pieces of software that together make up a search engine – the Spider software, the Index software and the Query software.

If you understand what these three do, then you have the foundation for getting your website to the top of the search engines.

Here’s what the three types of software do:

The Spider software ‘crawls the web looking for new pages to collect and add to the search engine indices’.

This is a metaphor. In reality, the spider doesn’t do any ‘crawling’ and doesn’t ‘visit’ any web pages. It requests pages from a website in the same way as Microsoft Explorer, or Firefox or whatever browser you use requests pages to display on your screen.

The difference is that the spider doesn’t collect images or formatting – it is only interested in text and links AND the URL, (for example, http://www.Unique-Resource-Locator.html) from which they come: it doesn’t display anything and it gets as much information as it can is the shortest time possible.

A spider loves links because they lead it to other web pages that have the things that it loves, guess what? Text, links and URLs!

The Index software catches everything the Spider can throw at it (yes, that’s another metaphor). The index makes sense of the mass of text, links and URLs using what is called an algorithm – a complex mathematical formula that indexes the words, the pairs of words and so on.

Essentially, an algorithm analyses the pages and links for word combinations and assigns scores that allow the search engine to judge how important the page (and URL) might be to the person that is searching.

And of course it stores all of this information and makes it available.

The Query software is what you see when you go to a search engine – it is the front end that everybody thinks of as a search engine – familiar ground at last. It may look simple but it presents the results of all the quite remarkable search engine software that works away invisibly on our behalf.

The main feature of the query software is the box into which people type their search terms.

Type in your words, hit search and the search engine will try to match your words with the best web pages in can find through searching the web.

But this too is a metaphor and perhaps the most important one.

The query software doesn’t search the web – it checks the records that have been created by its own index software. And those records have been made possible by the raw material the spider software collects.

What You Need to Understand About Search Engines

That is it. What you need to understand is that the search engine has done all the hard work of collecting and analysing web pages, BUT it only makes that information available when someone does a search by entering words in the search box and hitting return.

The words people use when they search therefore determine the results the search engine presents. So search engine optimizers want to know the words people use when they search – we call them keywords – that might sound fancy but keywords are only ‘the words people use when they search’.

And that’s what Wordtracker provides. Use keywords in your website copy and you will prosper: ignore them and your online business will surely perish.

Turn Blogging into 30 Opt-ins Per Day

Submitting to search engines is a viable way to go about doing getting your website listed. BUT, if you create a blog page and ping it. It does 2 things instead of one.
1. It adds content to the web that people can find (once you’ve pinged it)
2. It gets your blog and (because of the links to your site in the blog) your website spidered again, only now your website is spidered by the search engine in relationship to your keywords in your blog. MUCH more powerful way to be spidered.

What is a blog? simply put, is a webpage. You can put most anything you want on a webpage that you have control of and a blog is no different. Blogs are usually hosted at a place (many of which have high page rank – which makes a difference to Google and Yahoo) that allows you to set up a free account (webpage) and post things (content) to it. You can use it like a diary, or a running account of your marketing efforts. The more valuable your content, the more people you will draw to it.

You could even post this series of e-mails to your blog and have a running account of what you are learning about blogs in your blog that is titled, “What I’m Learning About Blogging” Cool huh?

Then you “tag” (or keyword) this posting about our emails with tags such as: how to blog, learn about blogs, blogging and website traffic, increase traffic by blogging, blog traffic, make a blog, blog marketing etc.

Then anyone who goes to Google or Yahoo and is searching for “how to blog” will come up on your blog, where you have this conversation between us. Also on the blog you have links to your Free Online Cash System webpage and they click it to see what you are into.

That’s how you drive people to your site.

The Basic Ingredient For Online Success – It’s Not What You Think It Is – It Is What You Think

The odds are not in your favor for succeeding in a home business. It’s a sobering thought, but it is true that only about 3% really make it big and maybe another 20% make it a hobby. You can’t do anything about everyone else, but you can sure as heck fire do something about you.

Why is that? Why didn’t they follow through with their plans, while others do?

When I finally learned the answer to this question the reason for my recent spat of success became apparent as well. So what is the answer? Why do most people fail when a select few succeed?

Can we have a drum roll please?

Everyone who does succeed, especially if it is something difficult to attain, have at their core a deep desire to do so. Those who don’t share that same Core level of desire will not.

“Desire?” That’s it? You’ve probably heard all that drivel before, am I right? In fact, if you’ve been anywhere near MLM in the last 20 years that is about all you will hear from your upline. “You need to have that “Burning Desire. Yeah, that’s the ticket, yeah, “Just look for people with desire and you’ll do great… Yada Yada Yada.”

Isn’t it true that everyone you talk to has the desire to make more money? What difference has it made for them so far?

And you’re right. You still have eight out of ten of your downline simply fade away into the shadows. The difference is in their level of desire. Get ready, here is another one of those overdone psycho babble truths. Overdone or not, that level of desire is what makes that two out of ten different.

If you think back about it, you’ll probably find that the times were going best in your life, you had a sense of urgency and a deep need and desire to accomplish what you wanted.

You must accomplish it. It’s a part of you. It consumes you. It consumes your mind each and every day. These are Core desires, and the people who achieve notable success in network marketing or anything really, have that accomplishment as a core desire. They are the ones you see on stage and hear on the training calls.

That’s it. That’s the secret. If attaining your goal, whether it be to pay off your credit cards, buy a house, save for retirement, or fire your boss, is not a core desire, and not attached to your home based business, you will not succeed. Period.

Having that desire at 100% on the scale changes a person in ways other than the single point of accomplishing their goal. It changes the way they see themselves, their world, their life. A desire like that does not come easily or even by accident. No one, and I do mean “not a single person in the whole world” is born with it. Desire like that has to be “swithed” on. The caveat to that however, is that it’s one of those huge switches that you generally have to take a crowbar and get some leverage to flip. But flipping that switch can be done.

It’s sad but true that most people confuse hope with desire. Hope allows you to try and fail and then walk away satisfied. Hope would have you saying to yourself, “I tried” and you’d be “OK” with that. Desire won’t settle for that scenario.

And hope is never backed by true desire. Hope is for the undecided.

For your best shot at staying around till you reach those goals you have, there’s one thing you can use right now. Quick, positive results do more to keep you going while you work on turning a fancy a longing or a hope into true desire. If you want quick results try something that goes viral, start a home business for free.
